Silk doupioni is such a versatile, easy-to-sew fabric. It has a crisp but not stiff structure, yet it is thin and lightweight. It makes up beautifully in all kinds of garments: blouses, dresses, skirts, pants, vests, and jackets. Test wash a swatch if you’re considering laundering to check for color bleeding and changes in the hand of the fabric, since most doupioni becomes softer with washing. Because it is stable in both length and cross grain, if stripes run from selvage to selvage, it’s fine to cut it so the stripes go up and down in the garment.

This has a light mauve background, with multi-colored stripes of pink and slate blue, as well as heavier variegated stripes in mustard, red, green, and black.
