If you’ve had trouble developing a pants pattern for yourself, this class is for you! You can bring your own mock-up(s) of pants you’re interested in, and Sarah will do the fitting. Or you can try on mock-ups of three different pants styles that Sarah has already made up – then you and Sarah can decide which style is the best place to start for your figure. The three different pants are: (1) Joyce Murphy’s basic JSM slack (hip sizes 35” to 63”). (2) Vogue 2948, a pant with a narrow yoke and seams down the center of both the front and back leg (hip sizes 33” to 55”). (3) Burda 8669, a pant with an interesting yoke detail and seam down the center of the front leg (hip sizes 33” to 41”). If you choose to utilize Sarah’s pre-made mock-ups, patterns will be available for you to copy. In addition to fitting your mock-up(s), Sarah will describe how to make the fitting changes back to your master pattern, and she will give you some tips on good pattern-making practices. Fitting pants is a process, not a one-shot deal: often it’s best not to make too many alterations at once, in order to track what is working to obtain a better fit and what is not. So after Sarah has conducted a fitting on you, you will make the pattern changes and either make a new mock-up or change your existing mock-up, depending on the extent and type of alteration(s) necessary. Then Sarah will fit you again, starting to fine-tune the fit. Occasionally someone can develop a well-fitting pant in two fittings, but more commonly it takes three, four, or even more fittings to get the fit comfortable and the pant attractive looking. When you’re at this point of fine-tuning the pant, very often you’re just making a slight alteration to the existing mock-up rather than making an entirely new mock-up. CLASS INFORMATION Supply and Equipment InformationA table and chair will be provided for each person, and pressing equipment and cutting tables will be provided for all to share. You will need to bring your sewing machine and a light, as well as your sewing notions, pattern, fabric for mock-ups, etc. You will be sent a complete supply list and instructions on marking and sewing mock-ups six to eight weeks prior to the class.
