Working With Stretch Fabrics (Wovens and Knits that Contain Spandex) • April 20, 2005

This one-day class will focus on working with fabrics -- both knits and wovens -- that contain some percentage of spandex. Information covered will include: what this popular fabric is all about; how to use it effectively; how to adjust a pattern for fit; what types of garments to make (and not to make); how to use a lining in conjunction with these fabrics; how to assess the amount of stretch in any given fabric; how to assess and work with the direction of stretch; and how to treat waistbands and facings.

You're encouraged to bring fabrics containing spandex that you already have, and I'll troubleshoot your project -- or help you plan one! This one-day class will be held in my home/studio. Please fill out a registration form (which can be found on my website) and mail it to me to reserve your spot. (Class fee: $125.00)

Day of Fabric Shopping in New York • May 5, 2005

Spring is the perfect time to go to NYC for a day of fabric shopping! We'll concentrate on finding a variety of wonderful fabrics and enjoy all that New York’s garment district has to offer. I'll provide you with my resource list, be available to help you with any fabric questions, and assist you in putting together interesting fabric groupings. Transportation to and from New York will be with Superior Tours Bus Company, which departs Towson at 6:30 a.m. and returns around 9:30 p.m. If you'd like to come along, please fill out a registration form (which can be found on my website) to reserve your seat. (Fee: $110.00 -- includes bus fare and boxed breakfast that bus company provides.)

New Cranston Article • Sewing Basics: Needles and Threads

I have a new article, Needles and Threads, on the Cranston Fabrics website (www.cranstonvillage.com) in the Apparel section -- right now there is a link to it from the homepage. It's part of the on-going Sewing Basics series. The next article will be on cutting tools and tips for using them.

Patternmaking Class Formation

My Patternmaking class earlier this month was a huge success. A couple of people who could not make this class session are interested in taking it later in the year (late summer or fall). If you are interested in this 3-day class, please email or call me with your preferred dates -- I'll do my best to accommodate your schedule.

More information about the class can be found on my website under Class Schedule, but ask yourself these questions: Are you frustrated with sewing because garment patterns don’t seem to work for you? Do you wonder why the depiction of a garment on a pattern envelope often bears little resemblance to the way the sewn garment looks on you? Have you tried altering patterns but gotten mixed results?
