Interfacing plays an extremely important role in the overall success of garments. Selecting the right interfacing for the fashion fabric, garment style, and wearer's preference is the name of the game. Below are high quality interfacings that I enjoy working with the most and that provide soft and supple support.

I will gradually be adding more interfacings. If there is a product that you would like me to carry or source for you, please contact me via email (sarah@sarahveblen.com) or phone (410-472-9253).

If you are unsure of which interfacing to use for a specific garment, or how to pre-shrink your interfacing, visit the fabric information page. I also periodically offer an online class through Pattern Review called Unterstanding Interfacings, which addresses these topics and much more. Visit my class schedule to see if I have an upcoming date for this class.

SofKnit™:

SofKnit™ (by HTC) is a fusible interfacing: 100% nylon, and 30" wide.

It is a knit construction, with some lengthwise give and even more crosswise give – it is frequently described as having all-bias give. It can be used on woven fabrics as well as knits. Machine washable and dry-cleanable. Available in both black and white.

SofKnit is my favorite interfacing, because it provides a soft and drapey support. It’s especially nice paired with soft silk fabrics, where some support is required but you don’t want to over-stabilize the drape of the silk. I also use it in softly tailored jackets, and anywhere that a light touch of support is desired.

Satin Weave™:

Satin Weave™ (by HTC) is a fusible interfacing: 78% viscose (a type of rayon) / 22% polyester, and 29" wide.

It is a woven construction, employing a satin weave ("floats" of yarn give the satin finish), with lengthwise stability and a hint of crosswise give. It is primarily used on woven fabrics, but can also be used on stable knits. Although it is machine washable and dry-cleanable, I recommend dry-cleaning; it doesn’t stand up to repeated washings. Available in white and charcoal (black).

This is a unique interfacing because of its satin weave, which makes it soft and pliable. Although it appears to be dense, it is quite supple when fused – even to a delicate fabric like silk charmeuse. To my hand, it’s beefier than SofKnit, but not as beefy as Textured Weft.

Satin Weave is a lovely interfacing for both classic and soft tailoring. I think of it as a suiting interfacing, whether the fabric is light-weight, medium-weight, or on the medium-end of heavy-weight.

French Fuse:

French Fuse (by Staple Sewing Aids) is a fusible interfacing: 100% nylon, and 60" wide.

It is a tricot knit construction, with lengthwise stability and crosswise give. It can be used on woven fabrics as well as knits. Machine washable and dry-cleanable. Available in beige.

This interfacing provides a little more "umph" than SofKnit, but it is still a light-weight and drapey interfacing. It can be used on light-weight and/or drapey fabrics to add some stability and support. And it can be used on medium-weight fabrics and in tailoring when light support is desired.

An added benefit of French Fuse is that it's one of the few interfacings available in beige, which means that it doesn't shadow through or change the color of light-colored and thin fabrics.
