Sarah Veblen is a custom fashion designer with a home-based business that focuses on teaching, creating clothing for her clientele, and writing in several venues. She has a Certificate in Fashion Design from Baltimore City Community College and a BA from Stanford University.

Dedicated to promoting sewing at all levels, Sarah teaches in her studio as well as other classroom venues. She has been a guest lecturer at PACC National Educational Conferences; at PACC Baltimore Chapter Seminars; at the 2001 PACC Regional Seminar held in Baltimore, Maryland; at G Street Fabrics in Rockville, Maryland; at Cañada College in San Mateo, California; and for the San Francisco Chapter of PACC. She has frequently been Susan Khalje’s assistant during the Baltimore sessions of the Couture Sewing School.

In 2001, she launched her own Intensive Study Program in Fashion Design, developed for both home sewers and sewing professionals. With an emphasis on design, fit, and pattern development, she currently offers classes on patternmaking, working with knit fabrics, and a number of aspects of design.

The core of Sarah’s business for the past nineteen years has been designing and making clothing for her private clientele, specializing in fit, innovative pattern design, and quality construction. Her focus is street-wear and soft tailoring, with an emphasis on helping women create a wardrobe that is compatible with their lifestyle. The right fabric for a particular garment or ensemble along with attention to detail and an excellent fit are the essential components to achieving sophisticated, distinctive, and comfortable clothing. In addition to woven yard goods, Sarah designs and works in knit fabrics. She also creates original design special occasion gowns on a limited basis.

Acting as a consultant to Purveyor, a small label woman’s clothing company located in Washington, D.C., Sarah has assisted for the past three years in the conceptualization of designs, pattern development, as well as technical aspects of construction.

A regular writer for THREADS Magazine, Sarah has more than a dozen articles and various other written contributions and garments. She was invited to participate as one of the three designers in the 1999 THREADS Design Challenge. THREADS Magazine has also featured her several times in “how-to” videos on the THREADS web site. She appeared as a THREADS guest in the 2001/2002 season of HGTV’s sewing program, "Sew Much More," with a show on making a wool gauze skirt.

Sarah is also a regular contributing writer for other venues, including the monthly newsletter, Sew-Lutions, for ProShow, Inc; the web site of the Home Sewing Association; and the web site of Cranston Print Works.

A founding member of the Baltimore Chapter of the Professional Association of Custom Clothiers, she has served on the Baltimore Chapter Executive Board in several capacities including president, and she has served on the National Executive Committee as the newsletter editor. In addition to other volunteer jobs, she was the teacher-speaker coordinator for both the 2001 and 2002 PACC National Educational Conferences; the chair of the Baltimore Chapter’s Evaluation Committee (which studied and developed an evaluation system for chapter members); and the chair of the National Evaluation Committee. Sarah is also a member of Fashion Group International (FGI), the Home Sewing Association (HSA), and the American Sewing Guild (ASG).
